Our Church has a rich historical
background stretching back over 125 years. St. Paul's served as one of the first
places of worship in Matteson and still continues to attract so many to its
congregation. St. Paul Lutheran Church was formed in 1868 as an outgrowth of St.
John's, Country Club Hills, then called Coopers Grove. It now serves as not only a
place of worship for others, but as a true historical site. A Schoolhouse was built
in 1875 for $600 to serve as school and church. In 1883 the congregation built its
church for $3,500. (shown to the right) The parsonage was erected for $3,000 in 1917
after a fire destroyed the original house.
In 1935 the first English service became a regular part of worship. Ladies Aid
organized in 1937. Electricity was installed in 1939. In 1942 stained glass
windows were installed. In 1946 voters meeting minutes were first written in
English. Sunday School organized in 1948 with 24 children. LWML organized in
1950. Parish hall built in 1954. Men's Club formed in 1957 and in 1960 began
one of our greatest traditions-the Potato Pancake supper. In 1961 Vacation Bible
School began.
The first contemporary Folk Communion Service was held in 1973. Women given
voting rights in 1975. The Fellowship Hall was built in 1976 and held our first
Country Fair that same year.
We celebrated our 115th Anniversary as a congregation and our 100th Anniversary of the
church building in 1983, completely restoring the interior of the building. In the
Spring of 1987 we dedicated our new Education Building, and burned the mortgage shortly
thereafter in 1989. One more phase needed to be undertaken to complete the building
project and that began with groundbreaking for a new church in the Spring of 1994.
With hard work and participation from the congregation, the completion and dedication for
the new church was celebrated in Oct., 1996.
As St. Paul's continues to grow in faith and in numbers, we maintain the
friendly and personable atmosphere that attracts so many to our place of worship.
With enthusiastic participation from the congregation and wonderful leadership from our
Pastor, Matthew Troester [seen to left],
our Church is still expanding and we look forward to people moving into the area to join
us serving God.
